I think I only remember anyone actually picking the actual number once. The winners are based on who is closest to the winning number. The first closest = 1st place, second closest= 2nd place and so on. Does that make sense?

If the winning number was 0234 (as you just said) and your picks were 9234 and 1234, 1234 would be the winning number.

Because:
9234 is 9000 away from 0234
and
1234 is 1000 away from o234 <--- so this is closest, see?
